A 'new energy crisis' is constraining the development of enterprise, industries and technology in many sub-Saharan African communities including several in Cameroon.

Wood and fossil fuels, the only amenable fuels for use by many in these communities, are increasingly becoming dangerous and very expensive for development. The fuels, when burned, produce sooty smoke and release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. The health status of inhabitants of these communities is reduced, their environment is degraded and the earth's shielding ozone layer is depleted.

The establishment of alternative cost effective and convenient fuels in communities will go a long way to reduce their dependence on wood and fossil fuels and cut the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere. It will also boost multiple developments of technology, enterprise and industries in these communities.

We are elaborating projects that would make hydrogen fuel amenable for use in grassroots communities, and developing programme proposals to expedite the electrification of rural and remote areas with the help of photovoltaic technology.

Consultation work is continuing to support and facilitate the development of energy saving technologies and other renewable energy production methods including biogas, wind and mini-hydro technologies for powering a range of urban, rural and remote area amenities.
